As I ran errands today, I found myself witnessing an irate child in the supper market. This child stomped, cried and screamed at his mother. I watched in horror, then my horror turned to disbelief….disbelief as this mother didn’t use any sort of discipline tactics….no stern voice, not the look (you know the one that says, “When we get out of this store…”), I mean nothing….WHAT??? This has not been my first encounter with this; I actually saw a women try and rationalize with her seven year old as to why she was being punished!
Am I really getting that old? What happened to the days of parents saying, “Because I said so” and that was the end of the conversation. Who is the boss? Are parents today to part to blame for the out-of-hand behavior of our youth? And why is being their friend more important than being their parent? I don’t think that I have heard a soon to be parent say, “I can’t wait to have this new friend”! If a friend is what you are looking for, go out, join a chat room, but do not result to procreating to have a FRIEND!
